In Second Grade students will learn about art in a new and fun way and build upon skills that they learned last year! It is important to me to keep the excitement of play that young students inherently have when it comes to making art but also teaching and instilling an understanding of what they are doing and foster a growth mindset when it comes to making art that has deeper meaning.

We will focus on answering the question "Should art tell a story?" in second grade. This broad big idea will help students start to think about art in a new way. We will start connecting different ways of making art and different artists to different ways that art can tell a story or convey an idea. Students will learn how to use art to tell a story and express themselves. Through this exploration students will be able to create repeating lines within patterns that contain overlapping shapes as well as an understanding for secondary colors, neutral colors and different textures. They will understand implied texture such as weaving and collage. Students will also experiment with texture and paintings as well as beginning to create various 3D forms. Together we will explore many different beautifully illustrated books together such as I Feel Silly and Beautiful Oops.

As the year progresses I will share all of the amazing work that the students complete on this webpage.
