In order to best serve our students, we need to take care of ourselves.
You cannot pour from an empty cup, filling your cup can be challenging, but it can be done.
Take care of yourself as well as you take care of others.
Self-care and self-preservation are not selfish acts. In order to do this, we need to plan for ourselves, take time for ourselves, and make sure we take care of ourselves. In order to best serve the students, we need to be your best self.
Self Care Tips & Organization
As educators, we encourage our students to have a growth mindset.
We don’t accept it when they say, “I can’t do this,” or “I’m dumb.”
We might even encourage them to use positive self-talk to calm themselves down or boost their confidence. But do you apply the same kind of growth mindset to your own teaching?
Daily affirmations can help you stay calm and confident even when faced with a challenging student or rough day.
How are they beneficial?
Help you overcome fear and self-doubt and reduce self-sabotage.
Daily positive affirmations help you believe in yourself and what you're capable of achieving.
Suggestion to try
I recommend recording your favorite affirmations on your phone as a voice memo, saying each one twice. You can listen to them on your morning commute, and recite the second repetition with the recording. This might feel uncomfortable at first, but keep at it! The power of affirmations is in repetition. You can also write them on a Post-it note and post them on your mirror or in your planner.
Gratitude journaling is the habit of recording and reflecting on things (typically three) that you are grateful for on a regular basis.
In essence, you are rewiring your brain to focus more on the positive aspects of your life and build up resilience against negative situations
