KHANS AND DRAGONS SPLINTERED IN TIME
Long ago, Tarkir was home to five distinct human clans who fought side-by-side against the five powerful dragon broods. Dragons on Tarkir are born fully grown from storms in the sky, and humanity was united in the reverence, and defiance, of their draconic enemy. Over time, humans adapted and grew in power, and eventually overthrew the races of dragons that reigned across the plane. With the death of the planeswalker Ugin, who the dragonstorms were linked to, Tarkir’s dragons stopped being born and Tarkir became a place ruled by human clans.
But Ugin would not stay dead. The planeswalker Sarkhan Vol, of the Mardu clan of Tarkir, would become linked to Ugin’s spirit, and eventually traveled back in time to save the elder dragon’s life. In doing so, the future was re-written, and dragons now rule Tarkir once again. What was once a land belonging to the Mardu, Jeskai, Abzan, Sultai, and Temur clans now belongs to the Dromoka, Ojutai, Silumgar, Kolaghan, and Atarka broods. Humanity is once again subservient to the five dragon broods, and for a time it seemed that all hint of the future-that-was-not was erased. But the once-Jeskai clan leader Narset ascended to become a planeswalker in this new timeline, and in doing so uncovered the secret truth: that humanity had not always served the dragons and could possibly rule once again.
In addition to the human and numerous variations of dragon races, Tarkir is a plane with numerous unique variations on classic races found throughout the multiverse, including mortal Djinn and Efreets, Rakshasa cat-demons, Goblins, Naga, Aven, and Kirin.
Ugin - Worshipped in a vein similar to a god, the colorless planeswalker’s life essence is tied to the very dragonstorms that spawn the dragons of Tarkir
