                    Texas Geography   Unit Overview

This Unit looks at Texas through the concept of region.  Students will explore the basic physical and human geography of Texas including a focus on Texas regions.  It includes a review of basic map, chart, and graph skills. Understanding and applying the 5 themes of geography to Texas and it's regions: A review of effective note-taking strategies and developing questioning strategies are two supportive skills for this unit.

¨       Apply the five themes of geography to Texas

¨      Practice effective note-taking strategies

¨      Compare and contrast the 4 regions of Texas

¨      Develop, use, and write different level of critical thinking questions

¨      Distinguish Texas Geography into distinctive categories using ESPN

SS.7.8A Create and interpret thematic maps, graphs, charts, models, and databases representing various aspects of Texas during the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.  ⓅSS.7.8B Analyze and interpret geographic distributions and patterns in Texas during the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. SS.7.9A  locate the Mountains and Basins, Great Plains, North Central Plains, and Coastal Plains regions and places of importance in Texas during the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries such as major cities, rivers, natural and historic landmarks, political and cultural regions, and local points of interest. SS.7.9B Compare places and regions of Texas in terms of physical and human characteristics. ⓅSS.7.9C Analyze the effects of physical and human factors such as climate, weather, landforms, irrigation, transportation, and communication on major events in Texas. SS.7.10A Identify ways in which Texans have adapted to and modified the environment and analyze the positive and negative consequences of the modifications.  SS.7.22A Use social studies terminology correctly. SS.7.22B Use standard grammar, spelling, sentence structure, punctuation, and proper citation of sources. ⓅSS.7.22C Transfer information from one medium to another, including written to visual and statistical to written or visual, using computer software as appropriate.  ⓅSS.7.22D Create written, oral, and visual presentations of social studies information.
