Last week we used some recycled objects to create art in the style of artist Louise Nevelson. She used found objects to create sculpture. Instead of objects going into the landfill they were used to create art. This is one action that will help our Earth. Next week is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. It is credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Think of small things you can do to make a difference in our world. This week we will learn about graphic design and create an Earth Day Poster. Visual Communication is called graphic design. Some projects graphic artists create are, posters, logos, web pages, and typography (lettering) design. The poster on the left was design by a graphic artist for the EarthDay organization.
Let's Get Started!
Begin by sketching out an idea in pencil. I decided to stick with our heart theme from our previous lesson. I,m keeping my idea simple. Think about what you want to communicate about Earth Day.
I added the world to the heart. Graphic design uses text and pictures. You also want to think about the empty space in the background. I used words, pictures then words. My piece is divided into three sections.
I chose greens and blues because that represents the land and water on planet earth. I used a thin black marker to outline the heart/world. This makes the details stand out.
See how the finished picture shows up with the outline. I also erased all my pencil marks after I colored the lettering. Graphic art is about communicating clearly. When you finish you can hang it in the window. This will make people aware of Earth Day and they can take action.
Check out some of the assemblage pieces made from recycled art! If you have not made one try it this week! Happy Creating!
