Meet the Teacher
Mr. Salaj,

Cluster Leader
Hi! I’m Jake Salaj, and I am so excited to be at Lanier Middle School this year! This is my 6th year teaching, and second at Lanier. Before I was a 7th and 8th grade teacher in Orlando, Florida!
I am a proud graduate of the University of Alabama (Roll Tide 🐘) and love cheering on the Tide. If I am not watching Bama then I'm probably watching NFL football in the fall. When I’m not at school I enjoy binge watching shows and playing with my two black labs, Riley and Stonewall!
Class overview
In 6th grade math students transition from numbers and quantities that are easily observed and counted to more abstract ideas about structure and algebra. Students will begin spending more time discussing how they think about mathematics problems rather than how they do mathematics problems. This process of transitioning into thinking like mathematicians during the year will be anchored in the following topics:
Ordering a set of rational numbers, such as whole numbers, integers, fractions, and decimals
Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative integers fluently
Solving and modeling problems that involve percents
Interpreting data summarized in dot plots, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms, and box plots
Modeling and solving one-step equations and inequalities
Using prime factors, exponents, and the order of operations to create expressions that are equal
