Theodore L. Schoenberger, M.D. passed away on November 10, 2010 following an illness in Napa, CA. He was born on May 22, 1923 in Cleveland, OH to Edna and Samuel Schoenberger, the youngest of their three sons. He attended elementary and high school in Cleveland Heights before enrolling at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, majoring in Piano and Composition. Enlisting in the US Navy in 1942, he served with distinction as an Ensign in the Pacific theater during WWII. Upon his return to civilian life in 1946, he attended the University of Chicago where he completed both BA and MD degrees. He went on to complete post-graduate training in Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis, and enjoyed a long and productive career helping scores of patients in Encino, CA.
In 1952 he married writer Elsebeth Nielsen in Chicago, IL, and together they enjoyed a wonderful 58-year marriage that produced three children, Karen, Thomas, and Stephen. He was a truly unique man who enjoyed a loving family and devoted friendships, and whose wide and varied tastes included music, art, travel, languages, food, and literature. Above all he was a very human being, at once complex and simple, who delighted in the similarities and differences that define the human condition. He saw humor as one of life's essential coping tools, and was admired for his ability to make people laugh and think at the same time. He loved his life Napa where he became a staff physician at Napa State Hospital in 1989, and found great fulfillment after his retirement in 2006 as a key member of the Master Gardeners of Napa County.
He is survived by his wife Elsebeth, his sons Thomas and Stephen, grandsons Max and Wolfgang, and by his devoted brother James A. Schoenberger M.D. and his wife Sally C. Schoenberger of Palo Alto CA, nephews James A Schoenberger, Jr of Tacoma, WA, John S. Schoenberger M.D. of Redwood City, CA, and Karl L. Schoenberger of Berkeley, CA. His daughter Karen Schoenberger passed away in 2002. [...]
