Looks at Muscular Strength/Endurance.
Purpose: To determine the abdominal strength of the abdominal (stomach) muscles.
This is important because the stronger the abdominal muscles are the smaller the chance of back strain as you age. Weak abdominal muscles places extra pressure on your lower back muscles.
Procedure: Have the students lay flat on their back with their hands to their side. Their knees should be bent, and feet should be together. Their fingertips must touch the first line on the mat before beginning the test (refer to the photo above). While conducting the test they must follow the cadence provided. They are not allowed to have someone hold their feet, swing their arms, or use their legs to help themselves up. They are allowed one mistake before the test is over.
Necessary Equipment: Gym mat, 3-inch measuring strip for 5- 9 year olds or 4.5-inch measuring strip for students older than 9 years of age, music player with adequate volume, sit-up song with cadence
This video shows student demonstration and teacher facilitation of the test to from beginning to completion.
