- CHOOSE A SHARED EXPERIENCE - Start with a topic that is common and will connect with all your students. Perhaps a read aloud story, a field trip, art project, game, or any topic which will be familiar to all. The goal is to produce a text that is contributed to by all.
- INTRODUCE WRITING CONCEPTS - While modelling writing, lead the discussion teach about what should and should not be included in the text as well as how it should be worded.
- WRITE ALOUD - Talk about your thinking process while you write with clear, focused comments. Introduce new writing concepts while reviewing and reinforcing prior concepts. Use the "Turn and talk" strategy throughout the process to allow students the chance to verbalize their choices as well as "how to" find the right wording.
- MANAGE STUDENT CONTRIBUTIONS: Gage and invite students to contribute where they will be successful by adding a word wall word, letters, parts of familiar word patterns, etc.. Keep each contribution short to keep the lesson moving and allow all students to participate several times.
- FOCUS ON THE CONCEPT THAT WRITING IS FOR THE READER - neat printing, sounding out trouble words, underlining trouble words to check later, model the process for achieving a piece of writing that is mostly error free and clear for the reader.
- MODEL REREADING- model re-reading previous sentences before writing the next. Model revising and editing to fix after reading. Reread the whole text at the end of each shared writing session. (Use the I CAN STATEMENTS available on the DOWNLOADS page to guide mini-lessons on revising and editing throughout the process)
