- GROUP STUDENTS WITH SIMILAR WRITING NEEDS - First, do a pre-assessment by observing students while writing (Hint*** For easy sorting of student data and goal setting choose ENTER OBSERVATION AND TRACK STUDENT CONFERENCES from your GRADE 1 ASSESSMENT DASHBOARD to record your observations). Then use the attached sort table to create small focus groups with similar writing goals/challenges.
- MATCH YOUR INSTRUCTION WRITING CONCEPTS - Now that your students all have a similar goal to work on, how will you best support their learning? Create brief lessons/activities to address the group or target individual needs within the group. Take a look in our LESSON LIBRARY for lesson ideas.
- PROVIDE INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCING - Within the small group lesson, engage each student in discussion to clarify misunderstandings, answer questions and/or provide targeted feedback about their writing and what their next steps will be. (Hint*** Use the goal setting sheets available for download by clicking the GOAL SETTING AND CHECKLISTS button on the DOWNLOADS page.)
- CHECK FOR APPLICATION - Monitor the progress of each group member and schedule a time to revisit a check with each member either by reconvening the group or with individuals.
