- CHOOSE A TOPIC - Start with retelling own experiences, use mentor/model texts and have students follow the pattern of the text.
- INTRODUCE WRITING CONCEPTS - While modelling teach about Content, Organization, Voice, Editing, and Revising, Consult the I CAN statements in the COVER BULLETIN BOARD set available on the DOWNLOAD DASHBOARD page. Always reinforce the writing stage (plan, draft, revise, edit) throughout the process.
- WRITE ALOUD - Talk about your thinking process while you write with clear, focused comments.
- FOCUS ON THE CONCEPT THAT WRITING IS FOR THE READER - neat printing, sounding out trouble words, underlining trouble words to check later, model the process for achieving a piece of writing that is mostly error free and clear for the reader.
- MODEL REREADING- model re-reading previous sentences before writing the next. Model revising and editing to fix after reading. Reread the whole text at the end of each modelling session. (Use the I CAN STATEMENTS available on the DOWNLOAD DASHBOARD page to guide mini-lessons on revising and editing throughout the process)
