Kalani Paoakalani Hiapo
Executive Director
Aloha mai kākou,
It is my great honor to serve as the Executive Director of Hoʻoulu ʻIke Center for Hula and Mele, an organization devoted to nurturing the knowledge, artistry, and cultural wisdom of our poʻe through hula, mele, and the broader traditions of Hawaiʻi. At the heart of our work is a simple but powerful belief: that cultural knowledge is not only something to be preserved, but something to be lived, practiced, and passed forward with intention.
My journey in Hawaiian arts has been guided by a deep commitment to ʻike kupuna—ancestral knowledge—and the responsibility we hold to ensure that these traditions remain vibrant for future generations. Through Hoʻoulu ʻIke, we strive to create meaningful spaces where students, educators, and community members can engage deeply with the cultural foundations of Hawaiʻi while developing the discipline, creativity, and leadership needed in today’s world.
Our programs are designed not only to teach the technical mastery of hula and mele, but to cultivate cultural identity, intellectual curiosity, and a lifelong connection to ʻike Hawaiʻi. Whether through youth education, community programming, cultural events, or collaborations with educators and institutions, our mission is to strengthen the cultural fabric of our community and inspire the next generation of cultural practitioners and leaders.
One of the greatest privileges of this work is witnessing the growth of our haumāna—seeing confidence emerge through performance, ʻike deepen through study, and a sense of kuleana take root in their hearts. These moments remind us that culture is our greatest teacher and our strongest foundation.
As we continue to grow, Hoʻoulu ʻIke remains committed to building bridges between tradition and innovation, honoring the wisdom of our kūpuna while empowering our poʻe to thrive in a modern and interconnected world.
Mahalo to the many kumu, haumāna, ʻohana, and community partners who walk this path with us. Together, we are ensuring that the ʻike, artistry, and spirit of Hawaiʻi continue to flourish.
Me ka haʻahaʻa,
Kalani Paoakalani Hiapo
