Tamariki in Room 4 are able to develop knowledge of reading through a combination of free play and guided techniques. They can explore text and images through a range of exciting books, large print on the walls, literacy worksheets and through story time and storytelling sessions.
Everyday we have time set aside to read big books/poems. Children learn concepts about print such as being able to identify the front and back page of the book, the books spine, where to start, which way to go, and understanding that we read from the left page to the right page,
Reading big books/poems also helps tamariki to learn comprehension skills. Tamariki make predictions about the story by hearing the books title and by looking at the illustration on the front cover. They use their prior knowledge of the topic of the book to help them recognise and identify ideas within and across texts.
