Reading

Reading books. There are some children coming into school saying they have been told at home that they need to change their book as they have read it. Please remember that we may seem almost normal at school but there are things that are not the same and have had to change due to COVID. Reading books is one of them, we have a very limited amount of reading books per class as they cannot be shared between whole school as they were before. This will mean that your child will have to keep their book for a longer period of time as they cannot change them when they want to as it is up to school staff on this decision. Returned reading books also have to be quarantined for a period and this also limits the amount of available books.

The children all have access now to MyOn, our new online reading portal with lots of new and interesting books to read. Please try to read these as much as possible!

Therefore, please use other books to read at home such as your own books, books from the library, you can also, if you have a library card, use the Essex Library Service e-books which are also free to use (https://librarycatalogue.essex.gov.uk/iguana/www.main.cls?surl=essexlibraries).

Here is another website (Oxford Owl) where you can sign-up for free to read e-books online: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/?view=image&query=&type=book&age_group=Age+7-9&level=&level_select=&book_type=&series=#

Also, with reading it is not about how well they can read the words. They also need to show an understanding of the plot, characters, etc (comprehension). Please see above for ideas on comprehension questions you can ask them after reading.
