If you are an American Citizen, you do not need a visa to travel to The Republic of Ireland! This means you don't need to do any paperwork in advance or book any appointments at the Irish Consulate here in the states before your semester or year away. You must, however, report to the Irish Immigration Office (GNIB) within 90 days of entering Ireland in order to obtain your Irish Residency permit (IRP). If you are not a US passport holder and are planning a semester in Ireland, please reach out to the office of study abroad directly so that we can help you make a plan!
All non-EU students must register with Immigration (Garda National Immigration Bureau) within 90 days of arrival in Ireland.
Step One: Fly to Dublin and go through Customs & Border Patrol
At the airport, you will go through 'immigration' and talk to an officer. The officer will ask you why you are entering Ireland. You should tell the officer you are going to study abroad at Trinity. Have your Trinity acceptance letter and International Insurance Letter (provided by our office) in your carry-on in case the officer asks to see these documents.
Step Two: Make an appoint with GNIB in Dublin at 13/14 Burgh Quay, Dublin 2, Ireland. Please note the immigration process is always subject to change. Visit irishimmigration.ie for the most up-to-date information.
Step Three: Attend your appointment with the following documents:
1. Valid Original Passport: valid for at least 12 months after your proposed date of arrival in Ireland.
2. Trinity Acceptance letter stating student’s full name, start date, end date
3. Holy Cross Affidavit Letter explaining that accommodations and fees are paid.
4. Proof of Sufficient Finances: Bank statements showing access to at least 1000 euro per month.
5. Proof of Health Insurance: Holy Cross ISOS Travel Insurance Letter
6. Trinity Student ID Card
7. Payment Fee of €300: Payment can only be made by credit/debit card – Visa or MasterCard only (cash and checks not accepted).
Trinity offers more information about this on their website. Please be advised that you are responsible for your own immigration status. You must comply with the immigration rules and regulations set in place by the Republic of Ireland. There will be a session about immigration during orientation. It is mandatory that you attend this session.
If you are lucky enough to be an Irish Passport Holder (or other European Union passport holder), you do not need to register with immigration once you are in Ireland. Simply travel using your Irish or EU passport!
We strongly recommend that you wait until you have your Irish Residency Permit before booking any international travel. There is plenty to see and do in the Republic of Ireland while you wait for your appointment!
