United States Postal Service (USPS) mail pieces not requiring a student’s signature (such as bills, cards, letters, packages, and magazines) are delivered to the residence halls by the USPS. Upon delivery to the residence hall, the senior resident assistant (SRA) distributes the mail to the appropriate student mailboxes. Packages delivered to the residence hall that do not fit into a student’s mailbox are left in the RA Office. Please urge your student to ask their RA on duty if the package has arrived. The RA is in the office each evening between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. To pick up a package, students must show their HofstraCard and sign for the package. Please note that USPS packages might show "delivered" online, but this delivery notification refers to the local post office. It usually takes several days for a USPS package to be delivered to the RA office.
The Student Post Office, located in the Bookstore on the lower level of the Mack Student Center, North Campus, receives all Amazon (except Cria locker packages), FedEx, UPS, and USPS letters or packages requiring a student’s signature. Students will typically receive notice from the carrier that a package was delivered. Please allow at least 24 hours for the received items to be processed and ready for distribution. During peak times (i.e., first week of classes), package processing will take longer. Packages that are clearly labeled as perishable will be handled first, and the student will receive an email directly from the Student Post Office [LAM1] [PP2] for immediate pickup. If a package is not picked up within three days of arrival, the student will be reminded via email to pick up any waiting package. If a package is not picked up within two weeks of arrival, we will consider the package abandoned and will either return it to the sender (at the student’s expense) or donate it to a local shelter.
Please encourage your student to regularly check their Hofstra Pride email account. On occasion, emails can end up in a spam folder, so your student should add hofstrapostoffice@hofstra.edu to their email address book to ensure proper delivery. Upon receiving notice from the Student Post Office, students must present a valid HofstraCard to pick up their mail. It is important to note that due to this necessary routing of signature-required mail, a delay in letter/package delivery to students is possible. Letters and packages received on the weekend are held for delivery to the Student Post Office until Monday morning. If a student needs this mail piece immediately, they can pick it up on Saturday or Sunday, with a valid HofstraCard, at the David S. Mack Public Safety and Information Center.
You may use FedEx, UPS, and other courier services that always provide the date of delivery and require a recipient’s signature. We strongly recommend that you use this method of delivery if sending items like birth certificates, passports, immunization paperwork, gift cards, or other items of distinct value. Student Post Office employees will sign for mail delivered by couriers.
When sending important letters or packages via the USPS, use a mailing service that provides a return receipt: Certified Mail, Express Mail, Insured Mail, or Registered Mail. Additionally, Signature Confirmation Mail, for packages only, provides the date of delivery and a recipient signature. The Delivery Confirmation Service from the USPS is not recommended. This service is limited in that it can track a letter or package only from the post office of origin to the U.S. Post Office in Hempstead, New York. Should you choose this delivery service, please note that the USPS delivers the letter or package directly to the student’s residence hall as non-signature required mail.
