We Are From
Sixth Grade
We are from the bright blue beaches of Palermo
and soccer games among the architecture of Barcelona.
We are from the softball field and the basketball court,
from “Wake up!” and “Time to get ready for soccer,”
from Oaks, our makeshift soccer net.
We are from zeppoles and pizza at the Saint Anne’s Festival,
from burning candles and crisp baklava,
from my grandma’s churros,
from the cake pan we used to bake with our dads.
We are from A’gong and A’ma,
from roughhousing with siblings,
from moments when everyone is together.
We are from the backyard mulberry tree,
from the tree that took years to grow,
from the tree at Columbus Park we used to climb.
We are from pollen that never stops chasing us,
with everyone saying it gets worse every year,
from the pink flower on the porch that brings spring to our families.
We are from the moment we hit the game-winning shot,
from the moments we spend with those we love,
from the moments we are with our families.
We are from happiness that leads to
“I love you to infinity, to the moon and back.”
We are from the moments we shared with you.
