We Are From
Fourth Grade
We are from the plants we grow with our moms,
from doing things together.
We are from moments when we feel powerful and loved,
from strong families who care for us and are the people who matter most.
We are from the crisp smell of books
and hours in the library,
from early mornings and late nights reading under the covers
until we fall asleep.
We are from running in the park
and tumbling in the grass,
from skipping rocks along the shore
and long walks with our dogs—
playing fetch and meeting new friends.
We are from the beach on sunny days,
playing in the water, playing tag,
digging holes with shovels—
where the possibilities feel endless.
We are from the New York City skyline
and the Hudson River we see every day,
from beautiful views that feel like home.
We are from gymnastics and cheer,
from water breaks and stretching,
from soccer practices, passing drills,
coaches shouting, carpools,
and endless nights of practice.
We are from Pokémon cards and burger cards,
from beasts made of food and imagination.
We are from drawing cartoons
and listening to Green Day.
We are from holidays and traditions:
Holi and Diwali, throwing colored powder with friends,
lighting Shabbos candles and eating challah bread,
from Jewish values—telling the truth and being honest.
We are from Israel and cozy homes,
from Málaga, Spain, with blue tiles, a gray gate,
a big pool and even black pigs wandering by.
We are from our dad’s famous pasta and steak,
from kitchens full of laughter and stories.
We are from remembering people and pets we’ve lost,
together forever.
We are from family and friends,
from the moments we share every day.
We are from lives that glow and shine bright
like a shooting star.
