Grade 6-8 Identification Process For Johns Hopkins CTY
In order for a student to qualify for a Johns Hopkins CTY course, they must earn 10 points on the Holistic Rubric and sit for the Johns Hopkins SCAT test. As a result of meeting the criteria detailed in the 2020-2021 Holistic Rubric, as well as the Verbal and or Math Johns Hopkins SCAT test results, students will have a choice to be placed in Johns Hopkins CTY.
The School and College Ability test, or SCAT has two sections, verbal and quantitative. As described by Johns Hopkins CTY, “The verbal section measures a student’s understanding of the meaning of words and verbal reasoning ability. The quantitative section measures a student’s mathematical reasoning ability and thus often does not require computation.”
Our academic course offerings in both Johns Hopkins CTY English and Math will follow a semester-based approach. English Language Arts courses will be offered in Fall, followed by Mathematics in Spring.
If a parent elects for their qualified child to participate in the Johns Hopkins CTY offering, Hoboken School District will assume the cost of the course. However, if a student drops the Johns Hopkins CTY course before completion, for any reason, or does not complete the course in time, the student will be unenrolled from the next semester course offering. Please note that any extension of a Johns Hopkins CTY course would be paid for by the enrolled student's parent or guardian.
When can students qualify?
Every two years the district will administer the CogAT test and students will be able to use this metric, along with the Holistic Rubric to qualify for the Johns Hopkins CTY. The next three testing years are as follows:
Administration 1: 2021 - 2022
Administration 2: 2024 - 2025
Administration 2: 2027 - 2028
New students and students in 1st grade will be given an opportunity to sit for the CogAT each year.
