Hoboken Middle School World Languages offers a dedicated period each day to maximize the opportunity for language acquisition for all students and keep a consistent level of rigor. This daily reinforcement will provide students with a sequence of instruction that will lead to increased proficiency in the language as well as the ability to enter high school at a more advanced level of study.
The selection of languages for all students in grades 6 - 8 will be French, Mandarin or Spanish. Students may continue with their language selection from the previous school year or choose to begin the study of a different language. Hoboken High School recorded fourteen more students who earned the coveted Seal of Biliteracy this past school year and I was just notified that 100% of our Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Language and Culture students at Hoboken High School scored a 3 or above (qualifying them for collegiate credit). The goal of the HMS World Language Program to build a strong, foundational in the target language so that students have an array of options to succeed at Hoboken High School and beyond.
As stated by the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, "A world language education provides learners with essential language skills and cultural understandings in languages other than English necessary to live and work in a global, culturally diverse world." At Hoboken Middle School, students will engage in a program that fosters the dual goals of the acquisition of the language; focused on proficiency of effective communication, and appreciation of the cultural differences that exist within the target language.
In addition to the work inside the classroom and enhancing the overall climate and culture of the school, our new World Languages team will be hosting an International event this school year to celebrate the diversity of our school community.
