Historical Overview
In the early part of 1881 when much of the county was still dense forest, the first survey for the Chicago and Atlantic Railroads was made. Two more surveys were conducted. In August of 1882, the ties and steel were laid through this section. In 1883, the depot was built and named Greenwood. On the first day of the following May the regular passenger train started to run.
Early in 1882, Adam Sheets built the first business room in the town. Mr. Sheets' business was selling dry goods, groceries, and making boots and shoes. In the fall of 1883, JL and Nelson Moser built a store and come combined. JC Horine built a business room in late autumn of 1883 and in the spring of '84 stocked his building with a general line of hardware. Mr. CIllie Close started a blacksmith shop and Mr. Wert set up a saw mill.
In the summer of 1883 when the post office was granted to the town of Greenwood, the name was changed to Wren since there was another Greenwood already in the state of Ohio.
In 1885, PJ Frisinger & Samuel Springer set up a sawmill, and the Hohn brothers set up a spoke and shingle mill. An elevator was built in the early 1880s and equipped with up-to-date machinery and a gasoline engine.
Dr. David Erwin was the first doctor in town beginning his practice in 1885. In 1886, JL Moser built a creamery which then burnt down in 1888. LJ Clifton erected a tile mill in the late 1880s.
The village of Wren, Ohio was incorporated in 1898 with John Robinson as the first mayor. Wooden sidewalks were built and in 1903 the building of stone streets began. In 1903 a bank was started and in 1912 electric lights were installed in Wren.
In 1890, the railroad was changed from the Chicago & Atlantic to the Chicago & Erie RR Co.
The first church was there before the town started with the principal spirit in carrying it through being Fred Sheets. The trustees were: Fred Sheets, Oliver Sheets, Pete Harmon and JE Major.
The first schoolhouse was built circa 1856 by Adam Sheets. The second, one room brick building school house was built in 1880. The third school house was a two room brick building. In 1908 another building was constructed which became Wren High School.

Wren, Ohio may be a small village, but it’s full of fun and friendly places! Kids love playing baseball and softball at the Wren Ballpark, where families cheer from the bleachers and enjoy sunny summer days. One of the most exciting times of the year is Wren Homecoming Days, a special festival held every August with music, food, games, and a big parade. During the celebration, people from all around come to watch or play in the famous National Wiffle Ball Tournament where teams compete in a fun version of baseball using plastic bats and balls. While Wren doesn’t have its own school anymore, children now go to Crestview School to learn and make friends. Whether you’re riding bikes, enjoying the festival, or exploring local parks, Wren is a great place to grow up and have fun!
