Willshire, Ohio, is a small village with a proud past. Founded in 1822 by Captain James Riley, it was named after William Willshire, the man who helped rescue Riley from captivity in Africa. This act of kindness inspired Riley to honor Willshire by naming the town after him. Nestled along the St. Marys River near the Ohio-Indiana border, Willshire became the first county seat of Van Wert County, making it an important early center for government and community life.
Over the years, Willshire grew into a peaceful village known for its friendly neighbors and rich local heritage. It once had bustling shops, a post office, and even served as a hub for early settlers. Today, it remains a close-knit community with around 400 residents, a branch of the Brumback Library, and deep ties to the region’s history. Whether you're walking by the river or learning about Captain Riley’s adventures, Willshire offers a quiet charm and a story worth sharing.

Seasonal Activites
To celebrate the remembrance of all military persons, past and present, we remove all of our merchandise and display pictures, uniforms and memorabilia loaned to us by those they represent. Thousands have visited the display throughout the years. All who come are amazed by the display of uniforms and artifacts and proud to honor those who serve. We have had items from the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and from many who are still serving today. All provide a good reminder of our history and the sacrifice that has gone into protecting our freedom. Our Memorial Day Celebration has been and always will be our way of honoring those who serve our great country!
