A free online tool from USDA to help address questions such as: What does our tree canopy look like? Where is our tree canopy located? Is the distribution of tree canopy in Hawai‘i equitable? How can we prioritize tree planting and maintenance where it can have the most impact for communities disproportionately burdened by risks that urban tree cover may help improve?

Urban forestry issues span from the mountains to the sea and include watersheds, stormwater runoff, sea level rise, cooling, tree care, fire and forest health, improved management of trees, support for enforced ordinances to improve the health of the urban canopy, and education to citizens and government about the value of our urban trees. Kaulunani focuses on improving the health and viability of trees in Hawaii’s communities through the implementation of educational programs; supporting Tree City USA communities across the state; providing technical training; administering financial support in the form of cost-share grants via Kaulunani’s Grant Program; supporting Arbor Day Hawaiʻi; and maintaining public/private partnerships.

2022 Tree Canopy Fellowship

Applicants must be students or have graduated with a degree within the last two years from an accredited institution of higher learning (i.e, community college or university). Four Fellows will be selected to carry out projects that use the Hawai‘i Tree Canopy Viewer and data to contribute to the mission and purpose of Kaulunani, as well as contribute to the goals of Hawaii’s Forest Action Plan, specifically, the Urban and Community Forestry section. Applications are due by September 15, 2022, 5:00pm HST.
