The expectation is that students attend all of their classes. Any absence will greatly hinder a student’s progress and their ability to gain meaningful formal qualifications. If there are concerns about the attendance of a student in courses then whānau will be notified.
If a student is absent they must explain the absence to the school with a phone call, note, or SchoolBridge notification from the parent/caregiver or a medical certificate.
If an absence is due to a school related activity, the teacher may use a range of strategies to allow that student to attempt the relevant standard e.g., an extension, reassessment. An additional assessment opportunity will only be offered for some standards.
If an internal NCEA assessment task or deadline was missed due to the absence, then the subject teacher cannot provide a reassessment opportunity until the student has had an extension approved by the Principal's Nominee. The student needs to email ncea@hillmorton.school.nz with their full name, subject and standard number that was missed, full reason for absence as soon as possible. The Principal's Nominee will then determine whether the reason for absence is acceptable and will contact the subject teacher and student to let them know the outcome. This information will be documented for NZQA.
Applications for extensions must be made at least 5 school days before the assessment is due. If an extension is required because of unexpected illness, a medical certificate should be supplied and the application must be made on the day the student returns to school. Failure to do so will result in a ‘Not Achieved’ grade being awarded.
There is no student attendance requirement for NCEA. Students cannot be barred from entering for a standard whether it is internally or externally assessed. However, additional assessment opportunities will not be available to students who were absent for, or did not attempt the original assessment task.
