Rugby is the most popular sport for boys in the school and the number of girls playing in the school is always growing. It is played from August to March every year.
In every first year group there is a mix of players that have played for years in clubs and players picking up a rugby ball for the first time. Coaches ensure that everyone that wants to play can learn at their own pace. Often by the time they reach 6th year some of the players that had never played rugby before coming to The High School are leading players in the Senior Cup Team, in the recent past some have even represented Leinster underage sides while in the school.
The High School rugby programme provides a structured and progressive environment for pupils to develop, with an emphasis on safety, enjoyment and the full development of each player’s potential. Players learn lifelong skills such as organisation, problem-solving and communication skills.
This year the first year boys and girls both went on separate tours to Cork. Recent senior rugby tours have been to Canada, South Africa and the United States.

The High School has enjoyed a distinguished sporting history since its foundation in 1870. Its central contribution to the foundation of the Irish Hockey Union in 1893 is a matter of historical record. A team from The High School entered the first Irish Senior Cup competition in 1894.
The High School is regarded as one of the leading girls’ hockey schools in Ireland and currently field a total of 13 girls’ teams at all levels.
Boys’ hockey is one of the primary sports, alongside rugby, provided for boys in The High School. The sport has seen huge progression over the past twenty years. In the last decade, the number of players involved has trebled. This increase in participation, and a continued investment in coaching by the school, has seen a change in fortunes across all levels.
The High School has had a long tradition of providing educational and sporting opportunities for both players and coaches by undertaking hockey tours abroad. A tour to South Africa in 2012 for the girls senior team laid a good foundation for senior players for the coming seasons.
