The Science department places emphasis on homework for three main reasons:

• Homework reinforces work carried out in class.
• Homework is individual rather than group work and gives the teacher a better picture of a pupil’s strengths and weaknesses.
• The good study habits of regular homework are essential for building up reliable studying for exams later in a learner's school career.

Although we make use of Chromebooks and Google Classroom for some homework much home learning is still paper-based and if a learner has mislaid the instructions or questions for homework then most S1/2 exercises can be downloaded from this page or requested from the teacher via Google Classroom. Some teachers issue substitute exercises often based on interest shown by the class in a topic of a recent event in the news or media.

• Homework for most courses is issued approximately once every two weeks and at least five days' notice is given for homework.
• Homework may be reviewed in class or may be taken in and 'marked' by the teacher.
• Some exercises may be 'peer reviewed' where other members of the class 'mark' an exercise.
• Feedback may be verbal points to improve on or written feedback is given in jotters.

If a learner does not submit an exercise they will initially be 'reminded' and expected to bring it the next day or next lesson. If learners submit homework late or to a standard well below what the teacher feels they are capable of on three occasions then parents and/or guidance are made aware of the situation.
