We are accredited to train and assess Young STEM Leaders (YSLs)
Science Bites - our annual Advanced Higher seminar 11/3/2020
Today we did a STEM competition with the Subsea UK group of companies. The idea was to get us more educated and interested in jobs related to STEM. At the start of the day, people from each of the companies told us about what they did in their jobs and how science, technology, engineering and maths are incorporated in them. Then we got into our teams and gave roles to everyone. One half had to build a robot from Lego Mindstorm and program it to do a series of tasks and the other half of the team had to design a company, logo and slogan to market it to the judges. The other half had to build and design the robot using various different sensors like motion sensors, light sensors and proximity sensors. This part of our group tested the ROV by letting it drive along a black line.
Then all of the groups presented their presentations and got judged by the people who came from the companies.
Overall it was a good and fun learning experience that got us all interested in STEM jobs.
Our group won, the other Millburn team came second and in March we will go to the final in Aberdeen hopefully becoming UK champions!

Millburn’s (unique!) STEM Influencers Community (MUSIC)
At Millburn Academy we have a long track record of engaging with local STEM (Science technology, engineering and Mathematics) partners in Science related activities throughout the school. To encourage more adults and young people in our school community to become involved in Science lessons we are setting up an informal group which will meet once a year to set an agenda for STEM activities in Millburn Academy and hopefully associated schools throughout the coming academic session.
Who can be part of this group?
· Millburn associated schools group Science and Primary school teachers
· Millburn Academy Science prefects and Senior Science buddies
· Local STEM ambassadors (Mainly in the Millburn Academy catchment area)
· Former pupils of Millburn Academy now working local in STEM related business.
· Parents of pupils or former pupils
What will we do:
· Contribute to school science lessons to bring a greater real-life relevance to the classroom
· Help facilitate visits to local scientific and industrial sites
· Help with school STEM events (see below for examples)
· Provide STEM specific course and careers guidance at key school parents evenings (e.g. S2 and S4)
The first meeting of the group was on Thursday 4th September with the photos above.
If you are interested in attending this event or just want to know more about this new group please contact Martyn Crawshaw martyn.crawshaw@highlandschools.net If you are unable to attend this initial meeting but would be keen to be involved please let me know by email and I will add you to a group email address.
Examples of previous STEM events we wish to build on:
· S2 Wind energy day. A one day interdisciplinary workshop for S2 pupils to design a wind farm and associated considerations.
· S2 Optoelectronics. Fifty minute tours of ‘exhibits’ related to light and communications similar to visiting a science centre but held in school for all S2 pupils.
· National 4 Biology. Fisheries visit. Two hour visit to a local fisheries trust research facility.
· Science Bites. Poster presentations (see below) on final projects by our advanced higher science candidates to a panel of local STEM ambassadors.
· Science Club. Weekly lunchtime club for S1/2 pupils keen on extra practical science.
· Science Buddying. Senior pupils regularly working with S1-3 classes to support learning and teaching.
· Scottish Water Pipeline challenge. Fifty minute group problem solving exercise with the context of water network supply, managed by Scottish water staff
