Overview
There are many challenging educational and training opportunities within the high-skilled world of Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security. Learners need a solid background in math, science and technical skills. Education and training can be obtained in high schools, technical colleges/institutes and universities. Along the way, career guidance professionals assist learners in assessing their educational goals, interests, abilities and skills to facilitate a good match to the cluster's many pathway options. Learners participate in relevant educational opportunities framed in the context of the cluster. They gain knowledge and skills through coordinated workplace learning experiences such as site visits, job shadowing and internships. If they choose, they may achieve valuable skill certifications that lead to employment. Colleges and universities offer advanced degrees that prepare learners for professional and technical careers. The Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security Cluster helps prepare students for careers in planning, managing, and providing legal, public safety, protective services and homeland security, including professional and technical support services.
Employment Outlook
There are approximately 5 million jobs in the occupations assigned to the law, public safety, corrections, and security cluster. Employment of protective service and legal occupations is projected to grow around 5 percent through 2024. Numerous job openings will stem from employment growth attributable to the continued desire for increased corporate, industrial and homeland security, and the maintenance of public safety. Median annual wages for these occupations range from $19,040 for lifeguards, ski patrol, and other recreational protective service workers, to $118,150 for judges, magistrate judges, and magistrates.

Half Day Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs Offered: Students have an opportunity to attend programs at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, the Levittown Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center (GC Tech), or The Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA).
Police Science and Criminal Justice (Offered at Hicksville High School, Only)
Hicksville High School offers students an opportunity to enroll in a Police Science and Criminal Justice Program offered at Hicksville High School. Students in this 3 period course will be introduced to the laws, practices and techniques necessary to work in the criminal justice system. Students will become familiar with the New York State court and corrections systems, police organizations and private security. Students will develop the skills needed to deal with social situations and security requirements as they affect the community. They will learn through hands-on, real-world activities such as mock trials, demonstrations, police patrol functions, field trips and guest speakers lectures.
Open to: Grades 11-12
Credits: 4 (distributed credits include: .5 credit Career and Financial Management, 1 credit Math-Specialized, 1 credit English, 1 credit Science, .5 credit Participation in Government)

Class of 2023: The purpose is to create unity and school spirit for the Class of 2023. We will raise money to make the Senior Prom a memorable experience for the students.
Class of 2024: Fundraising for junior and senior prom. Planning activities such as the Adventureland trip, homecoming participation.
Class of 2025: The club holds meetings, does activities like ice cream socials and create banners for Homecoming and fundraisers to promote additional activities for the Sophomore Class to bring them closer together as they move through High School.
Class of 2026: The class of 2026 is an integral club/organization responsible for making the class of 2026's high school experience as good as it can be. Homecoming, fundraising, junior prom, and senior prom are all things this organization is responsible for.
Comet News: Our club reports on school, community, and real world events and issues. Its goal is to give a voice to the students.
Equality Club: The Equality Club helps to raise awareness in various topics related to equal rights, human rights and rights within the LGBTQ community. The Equality Club provides a safe space that is in a socially inviting environment to all members.
Helping Hands Club: The purpose of the Helping Hands organization is to provide an opportunity for members (1) to become involved in activities which will facilitate the development of a campus climate supportive of academic, social, and personal success; (2) to learn leadership skills; (3) to broaden individual experiential background; and (4) to extend goals and "helping hand" philosophy of Hicksville High School
High School Mock Trial: Students will work cooperatively to develop a working knowledge of the law and legal system, analyze complex documents, develop a cohesive team strategy, improve public-speaking skills, think spontaneously in a competitive environment, follow the protocol of a professional demeanor.
International Outreach Club: The goal is to embrace and celebrate diversity and bring everywhere together for International night.
Key Club: Key Club is an international, student led organization that provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character, and develop leadership. We help run the Thanksgiving food drive with Kiwanis.
Model United Nations: Students simulate ambassadors to the United Nations, debating world issues. Students learn world politics and debating skills. We compete in two conferences a year.
National Honor Society: NHS does community service while maintaining grades above a 93 GPA, creating leadership within the school and community. We do collections for local organizations, each of the students do their own volunteer projects, we help PTA groups with needs throughout the year, create projects within the school to benefit students, etc.
Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society: The purpose of this organization is to promote scholarship, community service, leadership, character, and academic excellence in social studies among high school students. We work specifically with a philanthropy, Reason 2 Smile in Kenya to raise money and support educational programs at the Jambo Jipya School.
Student Government: The promotion of democratic purposes and procedures. The maintenance of proper student/faculty relations. The strengthening and increase of participation in extracurricular activities in the school. The strengthening of school spirit. The representation of students within the high school and in the community.

Career Pathways are a multi-year program of academic and technical study that prepares students for a full range of postsecondary options within each career cluster. Career pathways provide a context for exploring career options at all levels of education. Career pathways link student learning to the knowledge and skills needed for future education and employment.
Pathway 1: Correction Services
Workers in the Correction Services pathway are responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in prison. While the primary mission of corrections is protection of the public, many in this field are involved with the treatment, education and reintegration of offenders.

Pathway 2: Emergency and Fire Management Services
Every year, fires and other emergencies take lives and destroy property. Firefighters and emergency services workers help protect the public against these dangers by rapidly responding to a variety of emergencies. They are frequently the first emergency personnel at the scene of a traffic accident or medical emergency and may be called upon to put out a fire, treat injuries or perform other vital functions.

Pathway 3: Law Enforcement Services
People depend on police officers and detectives to protect their lives and property. Officials in law enforcement have duties that range from controlling traffic to preventing and investigating crimes. They maintain order; enforce laws and ordinances; issue traffic summonses; investigate accidents; present evidence in court; serve legal documents for the court system; and apprehend, arrest and process prisoners.

The legal system affects nearly every aspect of our society, from buying a home to crossing the street. Workers in the Legal Services pathway form the backbone of this vital system, linking it to society in myriad ways. For this reason, they hold positions of great responsibility and are obligated to adhere to a strict code of ethics.

Pathway 5: Security and Protective Services
Security personnel often work in public buildings such as museums or art galleries to protect paintings and exhibits by inspecting people and packages entering and leaving the building. In factories, laboratories, government buildings, data processing centers, and military bases, security officers protect information, products, computer codes, and defense secrets and check the credentials of people and vehicles entering and leaving the premises.
