Identification Criteria

Kindergarten - 2nd grade

Students in grades Kindergarten through third grade will receive differentiated instruction in their classrooms to meet their gifted and talented needs

Regulation 2464 Gifted and Talented Students

Grades 3 and 5

Students in grades three will have to meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for the Gifted and Talented Pull-out Program:

  • Utilize IQ score through Norm referenced test

  • IQ score instrument is the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test)

  • Percentile rank of 86% or higher

  • Utilize standardized test scores from New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) for Math and English Language Arts (ELA) (If data is available)

    • Exceeds expectations on Math (scores between 790-850)

    • Exceeds expectations on ELA (scores between 810-850)

Regulation 2464 Gifted and Talented Pupils

Middle School Grades 6-8

Mathematics

*Students must be enrolled in both Math Honors classes in Middle School. Both classes will be averaged in 6th and 7th grades to qualify.

6TH GRADE HONORS MATH


A Student qualifies by attaining all three items:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 5th Grade Math course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Mathematics state assessment (if given)

  • Passes a comprehensive Mathematics assessment (Link It Form C with a score of meeting or exceeding).

7TH GRADE HONORS MATH

If currently in Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 83 in 6th grade Math Honors courses.

  • Attains a four or five on their Mathematics state assessment (if given).


If currently in Non-Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 6th Grade Math courses.

  • Attains a four or five on their Mathematics state assessment (if given).

  • Passes a comprehensive Mathematics assessment (Link It Form C with a score of meeting or exceeding).

8TH GRADE ALGEBRA 1 HONORS/MATH TOPICS HONORS


If currently in Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 83 in 7th grade Math Honors courses.

  • Attains a four or five on their Mathematics state assessment (if given).


If currently in Non-Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 7th Grade Math courses.

  • Attains a four or five on their Mathematics state assessment (if given).

  • Passes a comprehensive Mathematics assessment (Link It Form C with a score of meeting or exceeding).


English Language Arts

*Students must be enrolled in both Language Arts Honors Classes in 6th and 7th Grade. Both classes will be averaged from 5th, 6th, and 7th grades to qualify.

HONORS READING/WRITING 6


A Student qualifies by attaining all four items:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 5th Grade Reading and Writing courses.

  • Attains a four or five on their Language Arts state assessment (if given).

  • Passes a comprehensive Language Arts assessment (Link It Form C with a score of meeting or exceeding).

  • Attains a reading level of V or higher at the end of fifth grade.


HONORS READING/WRITING 7

If currently in Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 83 in 6th grade Language Arts Honors courses.

  • Attains a four or five on their Language Arts state assessment (if given).


If currently in Non-Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 6th Grade Language Arts courses.

  • Attains a four or five on their Language Arts state assessment (if given).

  • Passes a comprehensive Language Arts assessment (Link It Form C with a score of meeting or exceeding).

HONORS READING/WRITING 8

If currently in Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 83 in 7th grade Language Arts Honors courses.

  • Attains a four or five on their Language Arts state assessment (if given).

HONORS SCIENCE 6

A Student qualifies by attaining three out of the four following items:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 5th Grade Mathematics course.

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 5th Grade Science course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Mathematics state assessment (if given).

  • Passes comprehensive Language Arts assessment focusing on informational text and writing with a grade of 80 or higher.

HONORS SCIENCE 7

If currently in Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 83 in 6th grade Science Honors course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Mathematics state assessment (if given).


If currently in Non-Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 6th grade Science course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Mathematics state assessment (if given).

  • Passes comprehensive Language Arts assessment focusing on informational text and writing with a grade of 80 or higher.

HONORS SCIENCE 8

If currently in Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 83 in 7th grade Science Honors course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Mathematics state assessment (if given).


If currently in Non-Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 7th grade Science course.

Social Studies

HONORS SOCIAL STUDIES 6


A Student qualifies by attaining three out of the four following items:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 5th Grade Language Arts courses.

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 5th Grade Social Studies course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Language Arts state assessment (if given).

  • Passes comprehensive Language Arts assessment focusing on informational text and writing with a grade of 80 or higher.

HONORS SOCIAL STUDIES 7

If currently in Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 83 in 6th grade Social Studies Honors course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Language Arts state assessment (if given).

If currently in Non-Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 6th grade Social Studies course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Language Arts state assessment (if given).

  • Passes comprehensive Language Arts assessment focusing on informational text and writing with a grade of 80 or higher.

HONORS SOCIAL STUDIES 8

If currently in Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 83 in 7th grade Social Studies Honors course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Language Arts state assessment (if given).

If currently in Non-Honors:

  • Attains an assessment average of 90 in 7th grade Social Studies course.

  • Attains a four or five on their Language Arts state assessment (if given).

  • Passes comprehensive Language Arts assessment focusing on informational text and writing with a grade of 80 or higher.

*Transfer Students - Placement in honors classes will be based on past academic records and required pre-requisites that have been achieved. A test will be given for a student to qualify into an Honor’s class where transcripts do not match with our course.

High School Grades 9-12

Qualifying Criteria

Honors Criteria

Students must have a minimum semester 1 average of 85 in a current honors course OR a minimum semester 1 average of 92 in a current college preparatory course. In addition, students must have 1 of the 2 following criteria:

1: a score of 4 or 5 on the most current NJSLA (NJ Student Learning Assessment) (required section(s) depending on subject area)

2: a minimum score of 480 or higher on the most current administration of the PSAT/SAT (required section(s) depending on subject area)

AP Criteria

Students must have both:

1: a minimum semester 1 average of 85 in a current honors prerequisite course OR a minimum semester 1 average of 92 in a current college preparatory prerequisite course

2: a minimum score of 550 on the most current ELA and/or mathematics PSAT/SAT sections OR ACT equivalent(s); minimum score of 43 in English and Reading (combined) and a minimum score of 23 in mathematics; required section(s) depending on the subject area. Exceptions: For Art, Computer Science, Music, and World Language, please see the specific AP course description in the attached policy.

All students who enroll in an AP course will take the AP test at the end of the course, or take a school-administered Final Assessment. When taking the AP test, a score of 4 or 5 will result in a 100% reimbursement of the test fee. (A score of 3 will result in 50% reimbursement)

Transfer Students

Placement in honors classes will be based on past academic records and required pre-requisites that have been achieved. A test may be given for a student to qualify for an Honors class where transcripts do not match with our course progression/program.
