DESCRIPTION FOR YOUNGER LEARNERS

Definition: Executive Function is a complex term that really just means how your brain works and helps you to do things like the following:

  • Making a plan and planning ahead

  • Organizing your materials

  • Making a decision

  • Paying attention to a lesson, directions, or another person

  • Controlling your behavior

  • Solving a problem

  • Thinking about a decision you have made


When a person has trouble with one or more of these items, it can make learning harder because we use all of these skills when we learn. The lessons on this site can help you learn ways to make these things easier for you to learn.

DESCRIPTION FOR OLDER LEARNERS & ADULTS

Definition: Executive Functions are defined as the cognitive processes that occur in the frontal lobe of the brain that allow a person to do the following:


  • Plan

  • Organize

  • Make Decisions

  • Pay attention

  • Regulate behavior

  • Solve Problems

  • Evaluate Decisions


When someone has difficulty with one or more of these processes, it can make learning more challenging because you use all of these executive functions to carry out tasks and learn new concepts each day.
