Setting Goals

Executive Function Category: Motivation

Purpose: Goal setting is shown to help students establish clear steps to help them accomplish a task. Post the goal the student has set to achieve in a visible location and refer to it often.

Learning Goal: The student will set a goal to accomplish an assignment, weekly assignments, or a project.

Materials: Goal Setting Worksheet (see below)

Options for Use:

  1. The sample templates below may be printed out for use.

  2. You can create your own goal setting sheet on a piece of paper that captures the information you would like to include.

Lesson Steps:

  1. Explain to your student that you will be working together to identify a goal to achieve.

  2. Start by reading an article below or viewing the video with your student.

  3. Select or create a Goal Setting sheet.

  4. To select a goal setting sheet, go to worksheetplace.com.

  • Select Setting Goals (or SMART Goal Worksheets for more long-term goal setting). There are many great options for worksheets to use.

  • To start, choose the one called My 3 Goals - My Big 3 Goals.

  • You can give your student a choice of which template to use based on preference.

  • This template can then be saved to your device, or printed if you have that option available.

  1. Next, identify the steps needed in order to reach the goal.

  2. Typically this process works best if the student is actively involved in the goal setting.

  3. Complete the goal setting sheet together and post this sheet in a visible location and refer to it often.
