Learning Contracts

Executive Function Category: Motivation and Self-Control

Purpose: A learning contract, or learning agreement, is a way for a student and parent to reach a defined, common agreement about the expectations for both the student and the parent regarding distance learning.

Learning Goal: The student will complete a behavior contract with an adult in order to help the student identify what behaviors will help him/her to be successful each when when completing distance learning activities.

Materials: Learning Agreement Worksheet (see below)

Options for Use:

  1. The sample templates below may be printed out for use.

  2. You can create your own learning agreement on a piece of paper that captures the information you would like to include.

Lesson Steps:

  1. Explain to your student that you will be working together to create a learning contract, or learning agreement.

  2. Select the download from the link below that best fits your student's needs (younger student or older student).

  3. Once you have downloaded the appropriate template, work through the information with your student.

  4. Identify when this contract will begin.

  5. Read through the contract together. Think about what makes sense for your family. You may decide to cross off items, or add other items.

  6. Once completed, you and your student should both sign the contract.

  7. Post it in a visible location and refer to it as you start each day.

  8. At the end of the week, revisit the contract and decide what went well or not so well. Adjust as needed. It is really important that your student buys into the terms of the contract!
