Gems, Timber and War in Cambodia

Cambodia’s tropical forests and gem mines, are with rich natural resources. In 1900s, the civil war happened. Money from resources are used by the government and also people who are fighting. Under Pol Pot ruled Cambodia in the 1970s. He was a brutal leader. He ordered deaths of million Cambodians and was overthrown in 1979.

Khmer Rouge retreated the country’s jungles and fought against the government. He also gained control of areas with rich rubies and sapphires. He allowed companies from Thailand to mine gems and the companies paid Khmer Rouge millions of dollars in return. The rebels used money to pay their soldiers. Khmer Rouge controlled some of the country’s forests.

Many trees got cut down and there was concern the forests would be destroyed. Countries forced Cambodia to ban sales of timber but the Cambodian government did not follow ban. Officials accepted the bribes to sell the wood. The country’s civil war continued until 1997. At the end of the year most of Khmer Rouge agreed to end war.
