Blood Diamonds

Diamonds are very valued and are command high prices and used in inexpensive jewelry stores. They are useful in industry and used for cutting and grinding. Diamonds are highly sought after, they are often a source of conflict. Location of the diamonds and small sizes make them valuable to the rebel groups. Diamonds are not always found in deep mines. Diamonds maybe spread out over large areas in Africa. They may also be hidden in gravel along a riverbed. People can use a shovel and pan to search for the diamonds.

In Africa, miners pan for diamonds. Then it makes it difficult for government to control who’s taking the diamonds. Diamonds may also be located in a remote area. The government may not have enough troops to protect the diamonds. Smaller groups of troops can use violence to take over.

Since diamonds are small, they are very easy to transport. They can be sold without people knowing where it came from and how it's used. Money from diamond trade fueled civil war in Sierra Leone in the 1990s. The rebels took over much the country’s diamond region, so the country suffered from violence as the rebels used money from the sale of diamonds. In 2000, the United Nations Security Council banned the export of uncut diamonds and the war ended in 2002.
