"My Coach Jennifer was a true professional. She listened to my concerns, respected my opinion, and offered valuable feedback. I would recommend engaging in the coaching services provided by Herkimer BOCES as a way to enhance as well as reflect on your teaching."
"I think the suggestions and feedback that was given to me helped me to create a more conducive learning environment."
"I was thrilled to have Jennifer coach me. I really want to be the best presenter possible. I appreciated the discussion of observation with her. I left with a number of tips that I try to apply now."
"I have felt like I was in a rut of teaching this year. I have truly enjoyed working with my coach and would love to do so again in the future. I think that this experience helped me to refocus my ideas and expand my thoughts and ideas."
This model of coaching is focused on the impact teaching and learning has on students. The process is driven by teacher and student data. The instructional coach becomes a partner with the teacher in identifying, learning and growing their instructional practice. Instructional coaching is designed as a partnership between the coach and the teacher based in the principles of partnership. Instructional coaches will partner with teachers to analyze their current reality, set goals, identify and explain teaching strategies to hit those goals and coaches will provide support to the teacher until those goals are met. This type of deep coaching has an impact on student outcomes.
Coaching will be based on the Principles of Partnership outlined by Jim Knight in The Impact Cycle. The Principles of Partnership include:
Equality
Choice
Voice
Dialogue
Reflection
Praxis
Reciprocity
Phase 1: Identify
In this phase the teacher gets a clear picture of the current reality by watching a video of their lesson or by reviewing observation data.
Phase 2: Learn
In this phase the coach shares a checklist for the chosen teaching strategies and prompts the teacher to modify the practice if the teacher wishes to do so. Coach at this phase provides modeling and teachers set a time to implement the practice.
Phase 3: Improve
At the phase the teacher implements the practice. Data is gathered by teacher or the coach on both the student progress toward the goal and the teacher's implementation of practice. Coach and teacher then meet to confirm direction and monitor progress.
Coaching cycles will include setting PEERS goals.
Powerful
Easy
Emotionally Compelling
Reachable
Student Focused
Coaching will be a partnership between the coach and the teacher. The teacher's knowledge will be valued. The coach may share their expertise, but recognizes that the teacher has expertise as well. The coach and the teacher think together. The teacher makes decisions aout teaching and the accountability is always to the students. The process always involves advocacy and inquiry.
Working with a coach on improvement is optional. We believe that when something is forced it is less likely to be successful, therefore enrollment in the coaching cycle will be voluntary. We wholeheartedly believe that teachers who volunteer will feel safe and more engaged.
Coaching partnerships are confidential and will remain confidential between the coach and the teacher.
