Whether you graduated from our beloved Henrico High School in Henrico, VA or you stumbled upon this page by the hand of kismet, we're glad you're here. Within these pages, you will find the cumulative work of the amazing 9th Grade English students here at Henrico. Entirely student-led and devised, the We Are Warriors project aims to gather, archive, and make accessible the collective wisdom of graduated Warriors. In order to practice an authentic research process, my 9th graders worked in groups based on personality type and work-style. Alumni of years past were invited to join us on campus and students created questions to ask their assigned "Wise Warrior." In those same groups, students interviewed, took portraits of, and wrote summary narratives about their assigned Wise Warrior. Students archived these works in an online, anytime-accessible website. Upon completion, students will create a physical gallery to which parents, friends, teacher, alumni, and other stakeholders will be invited.
After practicing their interview skills on each other and adults in our school, students interviewed HHS alumni. Over the course of a week, students recorded interviews with 35 Henrico alumni. They practiced their communication skills while deepening their research knowledge. Not all can be learned from a book after all.
After interviewing, students took portraits of their alumni to capture not only their words but also their timeless style. Above, a student poses with his mother after his group interviewed her. What a proud Warrior tradition!
After editing the audio of each interview, students wrote narratives to accompany each portrait. These narratives include information about the alumnus' time as an HHS studentas well as information about their life since graduation. Each narrative aims to answer the question: "What does it take to be a Warrior?"
Researchers rarely work alone. To mimic this truth in the classroom, students took personality quizzes to determine how they work best in a group. The quiz sorted them into one of four animal personality types: Lions, Otters, Beavers, and Golden Retrievers.
Lions were in charge of steering the group as well as guiding the group in reflecting on their work.
Otters were the consummate professional. They were kind and friendly but also took detailed notes to keep their pod members on the same page.
Beavers were the tech masters. They used Audacity software to edit their alum's audio then brought their pod members together to create this archive.
Golden Retrievers kept the peace but they also used the Otter's thorough notes to write narratives about their alum's experience.
The pod learned to function as a team or fail as a team.
