Our Mission:
At the Center for Spanish Language and Global Leadership, our mission is to develop a near-native proficiency in Spanish and a sense of awareness, acceptance, and understanding of cultural differences in all of our students. During their time in the center, students participate in activities specialized in reinforcing knowledge in other school subjects through cross curricular activities and demonstrating the nature of language through comparisons of Spanish to English. To achieve our goal, students in the program are allowed to use Spanish at school and beyond by taking advantage of volunteer opportunities and the study-abroad program. After their four years spent at our program, we guarantee that we will have created life-long learners that use the Spanish language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.
Instruction and Curriculum Advantages:
At the beginning of their journey, students in the program will have the opportunity to attend a 2-week summer jump start program, making the transition into high school much smoother. As these students progress through the center, they will learn to think logically in Spanish by being completely immersed in 2 or more classes per day. These class sizes are typically smaller, making it a more comfortable environment with a family atmosphere. In all immersion classes there are frequent opportunities to listen to native guest speakers, a perfect tool to learn how the Spanish language should sound outside of a classroom setting. Additionally, program members also have the opportunity to take a one year HCPS ACE Center classes on top of Immersion courses (see curriculum list of classes). At the end of their journey, all students of the program will graduate with an advanced diploma and earn the Seal of Bi-Literacy from the Commonwealth of Virginia. These graduates will be able to go to college prepared for advanced courses, enroll into the U.S. military, or join the work force as a bilingual young adult—all because of our center.
Engaged Learning:
Throughout all four years in the program, students will participate in various forms of engaging and hand on activities to test their knowledge of the language in exciting ways. There are also frequent field trips and guest speakers to engage in cultural language learning beyond the classroom. In the summer before or after their junior year, program members will have the opportunity to participate in a summer study abroad to practice their new-found Spanish language skills in real world contexts. Along with all of these engaging learning activities, the center also recognizes, and celebrates, many community cultural events surrounding the Spanish language.
Learning a world language:
Learning a world language, especially through the Center for Spanish and Global Citizenship, is proven to improve entrance exam scores—SAT's, ACT's, MCAT's, and LSAT's. On top of that, being biliterate in a foreign language catches the eye of anyone reading your application, whether for college or for employment. Being fluent in English and Spanish enhances opportunities working in any field (i.e. government, business, law, medicine, technology, education, and the military).
