McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act

Ensures that homeless children have equal access to the same free, appropriate educational programs as other children and youth.

Who Is Considered Homeless?

A student without a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, including:

  • Sharing housing due to emergency circumstances “doubled up”

  • Living in motels, hotels, camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations

  • Living in emergency shelters

Homeless Youth Are Entitled To:

  • Immediate enrollment without a permanent address, immunizations, or school records

  • Continue in their school of origin

  • Enroll and attend without school records

  • Receive transportation to the school of origin

  • Participate in tutoring, school-related activities, and receive other support services.
