Notes & FAQs

In 7th grade, students learn to construct, solve and interpret proportions and two step equations using rational numbers in order to apply and represent these skills in real world situations including statistics, percent, geometry and probability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How could this be used to get to know students?

Data explorations can be incorporated into “Getting to Know You” activities where students explore statistical questions centered around the population of their new math class.

Why is it first?

Data explorations are inherently conceptual allowing students to connect to mathematics and experience success early in the school year.  Data problems can be interleaved as application problems in future units.

How could Unit 1 be used as an overview of what is to come?

By exploring real world situations, real world numbers come up providing a context and early experience with rational numbers, number operations, expressions, equations, and even inequalities; therefore, it can introduce in a simplified way course material that will come later, and, in a way, act as an introduction to seventh grade mathematics.

What about remediation?

With much of seventh grade work on The Number System being rational numbers, this gives you a chance to start the year by filling in gaps in whole number number sense before taking on rationals.  Rather than postponing instruction to remediate prior grade levels, re-engage all students at a deeper level by remediating in the context of this grade level material.

What about integers in this unit?

Statistics with integer operations can be done in later units as application problems resulting in interleaved practice.
