Unit 1: Statistics

In 7th grade, students learn to construct, solve and interpret proportions and two step equations using rational numbers in order to apply and represent these skills in real world situations including statistics, percent, geometry and probability.

The Story of Math 7 - Unit 1: Statistics (Up to 19 days)

The big ideas of this unit are drawing inferences from a random sample and comparing two data distributions.  While working on these two big ideas, the concepts of addressing issues of bias in a sample and the variation between multiple samples can be embedded or explored afterwards for greater depth, time permitting.  By involving students in the choice  of statistical questions centered around their interests, this unit provides an excellent way for the students, and the teacher, to get to know one another.

Unit 1 Notes

By involving students in the choice of statistical questions centered around their interests, this unit provides an excellent way for the students and the teacher to get to know one another.  Including the teacher in some data sets may introduce the idea of an outlier.  It is also a chance to gauge & intervene with students' number operations skills.   Calculator use helps students focus on the statistics rather than the calculations; although, some simple calculations can be a chance to formatively assess and reengage with number operations learned in elementary school.  DESMOS calculators are provided for these types of problems on SBAC.  Placing this unit first also allows for statistical application problems throughout the year wherever they may be appropriate.
