September: Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
Texas requires all 6th grade students to have a presentation from the School Counselor on suicide prevention. With the rise in deaths by suicide it is important to start having conversations early on about feelings, emotions, and what to do when you feel overwhelmed with life. All of us matter and we should never make a permanent decision based on a temporary feeling. Also, educating your child that our feelings are not always the truth! Understand coping skills, having open, non-judgmental conversations about hardships are important. We need to show resiliency and educate our children on how we build that skill as well.
Model asking about your day: Ask, what was a tough situation today? Something you are proud of? Anything challenging? How can I help?
Model asking for help. Show that it’s okay to reach out when things are tough, whether it’s asking a friend, teacher, or counselor. I always tell students, WE ALL NEED HELP in Life! Encourage them that asking for help makes them strong!
Stay connected. Have meals together when possible, without electronics, or T.V. Play a game they are into or do an activity together that is intentional!
Listen first. When kids share, give your full attention sometimes they just need to know you’re fully present. Also, do not automatically give them advice! Ask, are you wanting me to listen or give you my opinion or advice?
Most children show warning signs, so recognizing them and having conversations about prevention are key!
