Senate Bill 12
A new Texas law (SB 12, 89th Legislative Session) now requires us to request your annual consent for routine school-based physical and mental health services.
If you opt out of health services:
The school nurse will not be able to help or provide any care to your child unless it is in the event of a life threatening emergency. This includes but is not limited to temperature checks, illness or injury assessments, band-aids, ice packs, and other non-life-threatening care.
If you opt out of mental health services:
Your child will not meet one-on-one or in small groups with the school counselor (for example, lunch bunch group or friendship groups, or Junior High Planning. This can also include support during emotional stress, family crisis, skills for managing emotions, relationships, and decisions.
They will only see the counselor for whole-class lessons or in life-threatening situations.

Individual counseling is done on a case by case basis. Students in grades 4-6 have access to a Talk Time Request Form. PK-3 are instructed to let their teacher know that they need to speak with me. Topics discussed in individual counseling vary, but often include:
Friendships
Anxiety
Stress Management-Stressors within the family
Responsible Behaviors
Many more options as well
Additional resources can/will be recommended if a student is in need of additional support. The counselor would always partner with the parent/guardian to form plans and provide additional resources.
If a student is in need of frequent check-in's for individual or small group counseling; additional consent will be obtained.
