Effective Strategies for Autism

Introduction

Welcome to the Effective Strategies for Autism Google Site. The purpose of this site is to provide educators, families, and others with information on evidence-based practices for children and adults with autism as well as resources to use in schools, homes, and community settings.

Some of this content was derived from a professional development course titled "Online Effective Programming for Integrated Students on the Autism Spectrum", which was previously offered to educators through AEA Professional Development Online. In an effort to make the materials accessible to a wider audience and eliminate barriers to access, the course content was supplemented with additional information and resources and organized on this site.

Research Base

The research base for the content included in this site comes from two primary large scale research reviews. The National Autism Center’s project (NSP2, 2015) reviewed over 50 years of research on interventions for children (0 – 21) and adults (22+) with Autism Spectrum Disorder and categorized the level of evidence for each intervention. The National Clearinghouse on Autism Evidence and Practice (NCAEP, 2020) reviewed over 25 years of research on interventions for people aged birth to 22 with Autism Spectrum Disorder and established criteria for determining whether or not there was sufficient evidence to categorize an intervention as evidence based.

Site Navigation

The site is organized under the categories of Characteristics, Classroom Supports, Communication, Behavior, Social, Collaboration, and Families. There is also a tab for COVID-19 specific resources. Use the menu on the left side of the screen to navigate between the pages (top left on tablets/mobile devices).

All of the materials and resources included on the site are free to access, but some may require creating an online account.

If you encounter issues with the site (broken links, Google Drive access issues, etc), please contact one of the the site administrators.
