Guiding Questions

1. What are the ABC’s of behavior?

2. How can an ABC analysis be helpful in addressing problem behavior?

3. What are the functions of behavior?

4. What behavioral function(s) have you observed in your classroom?

*Note: this video makes a reference to videotaping behavior in the classroom for later ABC analysis. Some alternatives to videotaping include collecting data in the moment, using a structured ABC form to save time, observing outside of teacher-led instruction time, or using an outside observer (another teacher, administrator, AEA team member). If videotaping is used, be sure to be aware of and follow any applicable rules or regulations, including district policies, related to the collection, storage, use, and maintenance of student audio/visual records.

The National Clearinghouse on Autism Evidence and Practice (2020) has identified Functional Behavior Assessment and Reinforcement as two evidence-based practices for people with autism. Complete the modules to learn more about how to incorporate these strategies into your classroom.

Tools/Resources

This ABC Observation Tool includes a checklist of common antecedents, behaviors, and consequences that can be used to collect data on a student's behavior.

The Jackpot! Reward Finder allows educators to browse various reward (positive reinforcer) ideas and select those that are most appropriate for a class, small group, or individual student.

This reinforcer survey can be used to collect information from teachers, parents, or the student themselves about preferred activities.

This document provides a list of antecedent strategies matched to function that are intended to prevent problem behavior and increase the likelihood of appropriate behavior.

This document provides a list of consequence (response) strategies matched to function that are intended to reduce future occurrences of the behavior.

This guide is intended to assist administrators and teachers in public school systems in understanding the technical jargon, methodology and basic principles surrounding Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
