9:00-10:00 Science: Build a Stomp Rocket

Newton's Second Law of Motion:

Force= Mass X Acceleration

Here's What You'll Need:

-Clean, dry snack bag (You can eat the treat inside!)

-Ruler

-Scissors

-Bendable Straw

-Tape (preferably packing tape of duct tape)

-Paper Towel

-Water

Here's How to Put it Together:

  1. Cut off the top 1 inch (2.5 cm) of the opened end of the bag.

  2. Stick the longer end of the straw about 2 inches (5 cm) into the bag opening. Center it in the opening.

  3. Tape the straw to the inside of the bag.

  4. Tape the opening of the bag shut. Make sure to tape around the straw to make it airtight.

  5. Reinforce the bottom seam of the bag.

  6. Blow into the straw to fill the bag. Gently squeeze it to test for air leaks. Fix any leaks with tape.

  7. Moisten the paper towel with the water, and tear off a small piece of the towel, enough to form into a pea-sized ball.

  8. Blow up the bag using the straw. Stick the ball tightly into the end of the straw.

  9. Place the bag on the ground. Stomp on it to see the ball fly.

Debrief:

This experiment shows Newton's Second Law of Motion. This law states that acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. You applied a force when you stomped on the bag, releasing its air. The force you applied caused the ball to accelerate or speed up. Once the ball leaves the straw, gravity works to slow it down, pulling it to the ground.

Dance Time!

Okay guys! You know that each year during summer wings we learn and perfect a new dance. Well, this year is no different. Just because we are "winging-it" virtually doesn't mean we can't learn and show-off our new dance moves for our virtual family event! Join us each Thursday during health and fitness to learn the dance moves to "Old Town Road" by Lil Nax X and Billy Ray Cyrus. You can check-out the video below to help you learn the moves!

You can also stay posted on how well Mrs. Albury, Mrs. Paul, and Mrs. Hicks are learning the dance too.

So, get those happy feet ready!
