KS3 Maths

Introduction - Welcome!

KS3 Maths is a step on the journey leading to GCSE Maths and beyond. It is an enabling subject that opens many doors in the future. If you are looking at this page you are taking another step on this journey. KS3 Maths develops your knowledge, skills and understanding allowing you to access a range of qualifications. This page will help you by demonstrating the types of knowledge, skills and understanding you will use in maths. We hope you will enjoy studying maths at Harwich and Dovercourt High School and we wish you every success on your learning journey.

The Faculty Key Stage 3 lead is Mrs Lacey-Percival.

Maths Transition Booklet

The new Year 7 students (2023) have completed the Transition Booklet provided on the Taster Day as a summer activity. These have been collected by the Maths Department and seen by the students' new teachers. This activity is a valuable source of support for the transition. The booklet contains a range of activities to enhance skills including numeracy, research and practical applications of maths, as well as an opportunity to learn more about key staff in the faculty.

Successes in Key Stage 3

Essex University - Maths of Games Enrichment Day

In Spring 2023, students from Year 7 were selected to visit the University of Essex to attend their "Maths of Games" day. This was a fun-filled opportunity to explore maths in the context of games and puzzles, such as Dobble. Students worked in groups to problem solve in a variety of different situations. Students also had the chance to explore the University of Essex and had a guided tour of the key facilities. We hope to offer this opportunity again to our current Year 7 students this year.

UKMT - Key Stage 3 Results

In Spring 2023, we entered students from Year 7 and 8 into the UK Maths Trust Junior Mathematics Challenge. We had some fantastic results, including:

4 Gold Awards (1 student was entered into the "Kangaroo" where selected highly achieving students are entered to the next round of the competition)
4 Silver Awards
18 Bronze Awards

Students who took part were presented with a "Certificate of Participation" to mark their involvement in the challenge.

It was fantastic to see so many students take part and we hope we can repeat the same success in Spring 2024.

North Essex Mathematical Olympiad (NEMO) - Year 8

In Spring 2024, students from Year 8 attended the NEMO at Philip Morant School and College and competed against many local schools. The students who attended had a great time and enjoyed taking part in the various challenges. We hope we can offer the same opportunity to Year 7 students who wish to compete in their competition.
