Current Library News

Welcome back to South School for the 2022-2023 school year!

Your summer reader should be receiving an invitation during the week of September 5th to the book discussions, book voting, and ice cream parties on September 13th, 14th, and 15th at lunch time in the courtyard in the middle of the school. Thanks to all 88 South students for their amazing reading over the summer!

On Monday, September 19th, at 1:00 pm in the MPR, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders will be able to attend an in person assembly with author Nidhi Chanani. Ms. Chanani lives in the SF Bay Area, and she will be talking about her brand new easy to read graphic novel, Shark Princess, the heart-warming story of two friends. She will be autographing all books that are pre-ordered by September 18th. Click here to buy a copy for your child!

New York Times best-selling author Chris Grabenstein will be visiting South 2nd through 5th graders virtually on Friday, October 21st at 9:15 am. He will be talking about his latest book, Dog Squad 2: Cat Crew, as well as about his life as an author. The timing for this visit is amazing as one of Chris Grabenstein's most famous books, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, is one of the Hillsborough Battle of the Books titles this year! Order one of his amazing books by October 28th!!

Lots will be happening in the South Library in the next few months, including a fall Scholastic Book Fair from October 13th to 21st (with an exciting Family Night on Thursday, October 20th--more details coming soon), Reading Tigers in September and November this fall, and the Great Pumpkin Carving and Decorating Contest on October 31st! Plus, it's not too early to start reading for the Battle of the Books (fourth and fifth graders) and Reading Challenge (all grades).

Finally, remember to join The Judy Goetzl Birthday Book Club so that the South Library can continue to have wonderful new materials.

Library Collection

The South Library has over 18,000 books. There is something for every reading level and interest. Fiction books are sorted into broad reading levels, with collections for Easy Readers, Picture Books, Early Series, Chapter Books (arranged by genre), and Graphic Novels. The nonfiction collection is particularly robust, with numerous animal books, picture book biographies, crafts books, and sports books. New books are added often--thank you parents for donating to the Birthday Book Club! Check out the Birthday Book tab to see the latest books donated to the library.
