Keep reading now that school has started! Don't forget that Mrs. James has some outstanding books on her Reading Challenge lists. Make sure to find the appropriate list for your child's grade level. South students may also sign up for Reading Tigers and Battle of the Books. So many books to enjoy.
New York Times Best-Selling Author Stuart Gibbs is Coming to South!! Stuart Gibbs, the author of Spy School, Funjungle, and the Charlie Thorne series, is coming to South on Thursday, October 10th! The assembly will be in the library for second through fifth graders from 8:40 to 9:10, with autographing of his new books (Spy School Goes Wild and the companion puzzle book, Spy School Entrance Exam) afterward. This visit is courtesy of Hicklebee's books, and you must pre-order his books by Monday, October 7th for him to autograph them. (Sorry, but he will not have time to autograph books your child already owns.)
Battle of the Books! Student teams read 10 books in a variety of genres from May 2024 to March 2025, and then compete against other teams in Kahoot quiz competitions. Round 1 in 2025 will take place on Thursday, March 13th, and Round 2 will be on Thursday, March 20th at the respective elementary schools. The Finals will be on Tuesday, March 25th at North School. Fourth and 5th graders, here is the new list of 10 books so you can be ready for March's competition!

Your donations make it possible for the South Library to have wonderful new materials. Summer Reading Parties: For those students who finished South's Summer Reading Program, Mrs. James held book discussions and ice cream parties during lunchtime on three consecutive days: Tuesday, September 10th (CYRM Primary Books for TK to 2nd grade), Wednesday, September 11th (CYRM Picture Books for Older Readers for 3rd to 5th grade), and Thursday, September 12th (CYRM Chapter Books for 4th and 5th grade). More Library News
The South Library has over 18,000 books. There is something for every reading level and interest. Fiction books are sorted into broad reading levels, with collections for Easy Readers, Picture Books, Early Series, Chapter Books (arranged by genre), and Graphic Novels. The nonfiction collection is particularly robust, with numerous animal books, picture book biographies, crafts books, and sports books. New books are added often--thank you parents for donating to the Birthday Book Club!

South Wins Battle of the Books in 2024: Hillsborough's own version of March Madness ended in the West MPR on Tuesday, March 26th with the South team of PAWsome Readers winning the trophy!! This was South's second Battle of the Books win. PAWsome Readers competed against the best teams from North and West as well as South's very own Devin BOOKers. Below are our South Battle of the Book Finalists for 2024! PAWsome Readers (Lara D, Allie H, Aoife K, and Simonne T) and Devin BOOKers (Arjun G, Colin C, Nicholas S, and Logan T).
Reading Challenge 2024 T-Shirt Winners and Movie Celebration for Readers: Many congratulations to Elyse L (design to the left) and Aoife K and Sage R (design above) for their winning t-shirt designs and to the over 55 students who completed the Reading Challenge during the 2023-24 school year! The celebration party took place on Thursday, May 30th from 3-5 pm in the South Library. Click here for this year's Reading Challenge lists.
Save the Dates for the Fall/Winter Hicklebee's Book Fair: This year's book fair has a Winter Wonderland theme and will be open on Wednesday, November 20th and Thursday, November 21st and again on Monday, December 2nd through Friday, December 6th. Plan to stop by before or after the Thanksgiving break for all your holiday gift giving needs. As an added bonus, the book fair Family Night will be held on Thursday, December 5th in the evening and families will have the option of decorating a gingerbread house together. Gingerbread houses and decorating supplies will be provided by Kathy's Creative Kakes in San Mateo for a set fee. Reservations will be taken beginning in November for this fun Family Night, but mark your calendars now!
