On Family Night during the Winter Wonderland Book Fair in December, South families enjoyed decorating gingerbread houses provided by Kathy's Creative Cakes in San Mateo. With 50 gingerbread houses being decorated, the MPR smelled and looked delicious! Afterward, families enjoyed shopping at the Hicklebee's Book Fair and enjoying cookies and hot chocolate from Bonjour Bakehouse.
South School students learned learned about the Constitution and the Electoral College for the November election, and their voting posters were hung at the Hillsborough District Office, Hillsborough Town Hall, Burlingame City Hall, and the Burlingame Public Library. Adults at all these locations were inspired by the messages and artwork of South students.
Thank you to all the families who participated and shared their amazing creativity! Although no winners were selected this year due to voting irregularities, we’re thrilled to celebrate the incredible display of imagination. A total of 70 pumpkins were brought to the South Library! Check out the nearby photos to see some of the many fantastic entries.

The graduating class of 2023 gave South School a wonderful gift—a ping pong table! That year, two ping pong tournaments were held on the new table, one in the fall and one in the spring.
The fall singles competition was won by fourth grader Eliana C (her second win), with third grader Niam D as the runner-up. The doubles champions were fourth graders Aoife K and Sage R.
In the spring, Niam D, then in third grade, won the singles competition, with fourth grader Nolan H as the runner-up. After the singles matches, players from 888 Table Tennis Center put on an exciting ping pong exhibition for South students. Before the tournament, Aoife K’s grandparents also gave a fun and impressive demonstration, showing students just how skilled recreational players can be.
Thank you to all the South families who participated in this year’s Pumpkin Carving and Decorating Contest! Your creativity, imagination, and effort brought so much festive spirit to the South Library. From clever carvings to pop culture-inspired designs, it’s clear that South students and families are not only talented artists, but also totally in tune with today’s trends. Each pumpkin was a work of art, and it was such a joy to watch students, staff, and families admire the display and cast their votes. This annual tradition continues to be a highlight of our fall season. Thanks to your enthusiastic participation and school spirit.
Thank you students and parents for sharing your creativity. We had over 70 entries!!
