Math Course Misplacement in CC7/8 or Algebra 1
Each trimester should serve as a checkpoint to determine whether it is still the proper fit for the students. Students whose grades fall below 80% at the end of the trimester 1 and trimester 2 grading periods may shift pathways to our rigorous Common Core grade level path. Seventh-grade students who did not meet at least 80% by the end of T3 may shift to our rigorous Common Core 8th-grade path for the following school year.
Should a teacher suspect that a student is misplaced for math as evidenced by class performance, the teacher, math department, and school administrator will follow the process outlined below to consider a placement change. This process applies to students enrolled in a compressed or Algebra 1, not a grade-level course.
For students currently enrolled in Compressed CC 7/8 in grade 7 or Algebra 1 in Grade 8
In September, the teacher will meet with an administrator (and math team) to examine available data (MDTP, classroom assessments, STAR Renaissance scores) and share current student placement concerns.
The teacher will meet with the student and parent for a check-in before or during the fall conference window. During that check-in, the teacher, parent(s), and the student will discuss measures that may be needed to bring about student success. The teacher will communicate to parents about placement concerns that would necessitate a mid-to-late October move if changes in class performance and achievement do not occur.
While a teacher may convene a conference to discuss the non-completion of homework, behavior issues, or necessary accommodations for a disability or language acquisition, a student will NOT be moved for these reasons alone.
Note: Algebra I is a high school-level course and is required for high school graduation in the state of California. Each year schools are required to report the names of students who successfully complete Algebra I to both the state of California and the high school district. If a student DOES NOT successfully complete Algebra 1, the course will need to be repeated in high school.
