Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I would like to take the time to thank all of you for a wonderful and successful start to the school year. As we work towards our action plan of ensuring that “Every Person, Every Day” knows that they matter, feel connected and see school as a place of joy, we take time to dwell in gratitude that our students are back in our classrooms with us.
Our students have been spending the last few weeks learning about their classmates, teachers, routines and procedures within their homerooms and spaces throughout the whole school. This includes special area classes, cafes, buses and The Giving Garden. These first weeks set up the foundation for our students to be successful throughout the school year.
Besides a successful start in our classrooms, we have also enjoyed time to connect at our Open Houses and Hot Dog Social. I am always overwhelmed at how much our UPES families continue to show their support by attending and volunteering at our school events! It is all of our people that make our school such a wonderful place to be!
On October 12th our PTSA will be hosting our very first Fun Run. This activity allows us to fundraise for a plethora of events that the PTSA hosts and supports. More importantly, it will allow us to come together as a school community to engage in a fun and positive event as a whole. Every child will wear a fun run t-shirt, and work together as a classroom to walk/run/navigate the track to support our PTSA. It will be a high energy, positive event for our whole school. If needed, we do have a rain date of October 13th.
We look forward to October and all of the wonderful fun and fall learning activities that our students will experience!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Molly Dehlinger

Parent Volunteers - New this Year:
All volunteers must complete the online training each year, even if you have been trained in the past. This includes class field trip volunteers. Instructions are now found in the Form Library of your Operoo account. This includes the link to the training along with information on registering for an account. We will need this done this well in advance of the date(s) you are planning to volunteer, as they must also be Board-of-Education approved before being a volunteer. Thank you.

Scholastic Book Fair
Dear Families:
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them on their journey to becoming lifelong readers. AND—as always—every purchase at the Fair benefits our school.
The Book Fair is yet, another event, that is hosted by our PTSA. The committee chair is Amy Coon who, along with many other volunteers, give of their time and energy to help plan, organize and run this event for UPES. Amy has asked me to share the following:
Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from Monday, October 16th through Friday, October 20th, during school hours, in the Union Auditorium. We will also have an evening event for families on Thursday, October 19th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/UPES.
The countdown to more Bookjoy is on! More information to come as we get closer, please continue to monitor the UPES PTSA Facebook Group!
Can’t wait to catch you at the Fair!
Happy reading,
Amy Coon and Molly Dehlinger
Last year, we started Uniquely U at UPES. The goal is to be able to bring some of the amazing things that our students are doing outside the walls of UPES into our classrooms and school. The submissions will be shown at our Community Celebrations that we host during the school year. More importantly, our teachers will be bringing these submissions into their classroom discussions to highlight how our students make a positive impact on their families and their communities.
In addition, we are, again, teaming up with The Kiwanis Club of Hamburg. Hamburg Central School District and the Kiwanis Club have been longstanding partners; however, moving forward, the Kiwanis Club will be recognizing students at UPES who are using their own time to build a better community whether through volunteering, community projects, or simply helping out a neighbor.
We wanted to share this so you can snap pictures of your kiddos if you catch them demonstrating extraordinary character. We will be sending out a Google Form to send in a submission during the month of October. Look for it in your email in the next few weeks.
Union Street Parking Lot and Car Pick-Up
The change in our arrival and dismissal in our Union parking lot has gone quite smoothly with just a few small bumps that we were able to work through quickly. Thank you to all of our families for being patient as we instituted our new system! A friendly reminder, if you are planning to pick up your child after 2:00, you may want to consider parking on the street. We kindly ask that you consider not parking where the car pick-up line forms. If you chose to park in the Union lot after this time, you risk getting caught in dismissal traffic. Please share this information with anyone who may be on your emergency contact list who may be picking up your child at the end of the school day.
Warm the Children
Welcome back! It might seem too soon to think about winter weather, but it's coming! The Warm the Children program is available to help If your family needs support with providing winter clothing for your children. UPES also works with agencies to provide holiday gifts for our families. Please feel free to reach out to Heather Cantie, School Social Worker, at (716) 646-3280 ext. 4218 for more information about our programs. All calls are confidential.
